The H.A.R.F Center Progress

HARF’s programs are bursting at the seams. From its inception, HARF planned to have a physical animal center, as its current “center without walls” limits the number of animals they can save and the number of people they can touch. HARF calls their future facility a “Center: where they can bring animals, people, and nature together for the benefit of all three. This year, HARF’s dream is coming to fruition. They purchased ten acres of land in Waihe’e, Maui and are ready to build their foundational building, a large barn. The barn design is 5,000 square feet, with a twelve (12) foot overhand roof around the entire structure, bringing the total under-roof area to 11,000 square feet.

HARF realized the great need for owners to help maintain the pet population on Maui and so in the January 2018 HARF opened its temporary Surgical Center on the Waihe’e property. Since January we have held monthly Spay/Neuter clinics and have even held days for pet dental checks and cleanings. Completed Construction Items:

  1. MULTI-USE BARN – In the Winter of 2018, HARF purchased and erected our first building for our new Center. The Multi-Use Barn will house our Horses, Dogs and Cats. The Multi-Use Barn is up, but still in need of plumbing, electrical and wastewater systems prior to use by the animals or humans.
  2. FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM – Over the Summer of 2019, our Fire Safety/Sprinkler system was installed in our new multi-use barn.
  3. COUNTY WATER METER – The Water Meter for the property was installed over the Summer, which will supply water for all of the property’s needs as we grow.
  4. CENTER ENTRANCE – The new Concrete Entrance way will replace the gravel entrance to the HARF Center that we currently use.
  5. SURGERY CENTER – Our temporary Surgical Center was opened in 2018 allowing us to care for our animals and bring down our operating costs.
  6. PRE/POST SURGERY – Our new covered Pre/Post Surgery Recovery area gives us space to monitor and comfort the animal’s receiving spay, neuter or dental procedures.
  7. WASTE WATER SYSTEM – Our new septic system designed by Taylor Engineering and installed by Pico Contracting is complete.
  8. PERIMETER FENCE – The HARF Centers 10 acers is completed enclosed by our perimeter fencing thanks to our terrific fence team.
  9. PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM – With HARF’s goal to expand our programs and yet reduce our carbon footprint, the decision was made to go off grid for electricity, so our new photovoltaic panel and battery system will provide the power needed for our animal barn while helping us go green.
  10. ELECTRICAL WIRING – Our permit was approved and all of the wiring for electricity in the barn was started in September of 2021 with Alakai Electric completing the installation.
  11. MECHANICAL – Our water and drain lines are scheduled to start as soon as the permit is finalized with the Water Dept. and Planning Commission. R & D Mechanical are ready to install our water lines and have us ready for concrete.
  12. INTERNET – Our amazing supporter John Varell and his crew helped to install the housing and pull boxes for our internet line running from the road to the barn. All of our animal records are digital now so having internet in the barn is required to keep all of our animal records up to date. The plan also includes web cams so our followers will have the ability to check in on our rescue animals as they run and play in the fields.

H.A.R.F Center Plans

Main Building
The Main Building will consist of the Welcome and Adoption Center, Veterinary Clinic and the Humane Education Center. All Visitors will pass through the Welcome Center on arrival.

Multi-Use Large Barn
The Multi-Use Large Barn will be the first building on the property. Initially it will serve as HARF’s headquarters. All existing activities will be moved into the barn allowing for improved functionality and a significant cost savings for the organization. It will also, give the organization the time and space to plan, fundraise and build out the remainder of the center. Once the Center is complete the large barn will be utilized for equine veterinary care, rehabilitation and the Equine Therapy Program.

Animal Education Barn
The Animal Education Barn is a key part of HARF’s commitment to provide a positive and interactive education environment. The barn will allow children of all ages to have hands on experience with barn yard animals of all types; fostering compassion and responsibility.

Enrichment & Therapy Pool
Animal enrichment and therapy are key factors in assisting animals to be well and stay well; not only physically, but emotionally. HARF wants all its animals to have a positive experience while in their care and to be ready to move on to their forever home.

Hound Headquarters
Hound Headquarters will consist of a wide variety of activities and spaces – everything from comfy suites, bathing stations, interactive play yards and meet and greet areas with adoptable families.

Dog Park
The Dog Park will be a large “park like” setting for large and small dogs. It will be open to the public and provide a great off leash option for dog’s owners to run and play with their pets.

Caretaker’s Home
In an effort to address the animal’s needs, day or night, a caretaker’s home has been included into the Center plan. Having someone on property at all times also allows for the organization to be certified for equine rescue and rehabilitation.
